Yamazaki Distillery, established in 1923, was the first malt whiskey distillery in Japan, located in the Yamazaki district of Osaka Prefecture, on the border of Kyoto Prefecture.
Shinjiro Torii, founder and chairperson of Kotobukiya, Suntory’s predecessor, wanted to make authentic whiskey, and he hired Masataka Taketsuru as the factory manager of the Yamazaki distillery in 1924, whom became the founder of Nikka Whisky later. The first whiskey became available for sale in 1929, it is marketed as “White labal”.
The current single malt “Yamazaki” was launched in 1995, and it was in 2003 that “Yamazaki 12Years Old” became the first Japanese whiskey to won a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC).
The distillery sparked the popularity of Japanese whiskey, and in 2020, ”Yamazaki 55 Years Old” that is a long-aged Yamazaki brand, was sold by lottery, attracting attention from around the world.
